31 here in washington. our friends down near pax river, you're 25. i'm happy to say so far fingers crossed monday morning has been a good commute. no problems to report all around the beltway. we're going to zoom in first of all to the south side of town coming up from the occoquan river right up towards springfield. we'll take a look live here. all lanes are open and volume still light on the northbound side of i-95 and heading up toward duke street. here's the tysons corner area route 7 no problems to report. in tysons coming in from leesburg to the beltway, same story on the dulles toll road and 66 as well. in fact, we'll take a live look at the northbound side of 395 at duke street. if you're planning to head there on our vdot camera, all lanes are open there heading up towards the 14th street bridge and no problems to report in virginia. coming up in my next report, we'll go into maryland at 5:10. back to you. >> thank you, monika. well, the new york giants are super bowl champions. >> what a great game. went down to the last play.

it was not without controversy, though. manuel gallegus got a front row seat. >> reporter: new york giants fans are in a state of euphoria. >> this is unbelievable. we actually got to see the giants win, get another super bowl. >> reporter: the celebration started in indianapolis. and in new york fans poured into times square ready to party. super bowl xlvi was a nail biter. the patriots took the lead at the end of the first half but in the 4th quarter, a big pass by eli manning sustained a drive that was capped off by this amad bradshaw run for the go ahead score. one last gasp by new england came up short giving the giants the win. manning was named the game's most valuable player. >> this isn't about one person. this is about a whole team coming together, getting this win. >> reporter: besides the action on the field, once again the half time show was marked by a moment of controversy.

madonna did her best to keep the concert family friendly, but fellow performer mia flipped off the camera and cursed during the show. nbc later apologized to fans calling the obscene gesture completely inappropriate. for new england it's the second tough super bowl loss to the giants in four years and some new yorkers had no problem rubbing it in. >> must be a rough night for you, huh, boys? >> there's new york for you right there. >> reporter: for giants fans everywhere, this was a day to remember, another super bowl trophy is headed to new york. manuel gallegus, cbs news, indianapolis. in other news 11 people have been arrested since this weekend when park police began clearing mcpherson square of tents. >> today park police are expected to be at the other occupy d.c. site in freedom plaza. delia goncalves live at freedom plaza with more on what we can expect so far. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. so far things are very quiet here at freedom plaza. we see a couple of protesters

kind of around in a circle just kind of gathering. we've seen some police officers looking and making sure they are abiding by the no camping rule even though one person was arrested here yesterday. it is still a very much calmer scene during the police inspection. park police officers began inspecting the tent saturday morning while protesters stood behind barricades and simply watched crews and hazmat crews and tossed away bedding and any tents found to be a health hazard, including their medical tent. s.w.a.t. team officers in full riot gear were on standby but were not needed. to give you an idea how smooth the day went, protesters were playing classic rock including the beatles during the police action. that of course in stark contrast to what happened saturday at mcpherson square. police on foot and horseback stormed the park. protesters taunted police with shouts and swears. there was plenty of shoving. even one officer was hit in the face with a brick. now that one protester who

allegedly threw the rock -- the brick rather at the police officer's face is now charged with felony assault. park police remind us they are not evicting these occupiers, simply finally enforcing that no camping rule so where they're sleeping now? i'll let you know coming up in my next report in a half-hour. back to you. >> thank you, delia. today a former university of virginia lacrosse player goes on trial for murder. george hugueley from chevy chase is accused of killing his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend- yardley love. police say he admitted to kicking down love's bedroom door in may 2010 and shaking her several times and that her head hit the wall. but his defense attorneys are arguing that love died from an irregular heart beat after taking a prescribed drug and drinking alcohol. the judge has banned news cameras inside the courtroom. the trial of former d.c. mayoral candidate is also set

to begin today. sewall upon brown is charged with driving without a valid license. brown was arrested last september after being pulled over for an unpaid ticket. he as accused aides to vincent gray of promising him a job during last year's campaign. federal investigators are also investigating his claims. president obama says he doesn't think israel has made up its mind yet about whether to attack iran over its nuclear program. in an interview with nbc, the president said the united states was working side by side with israel to resolve the iran situation. the president says he hopes the whole thing can be resolved diplomatically. in campaign 2012, republican presidential candidate mitt romney is hoping to continue his winning streak tomorrow when colorado, minnesota and missouri hold their g.o.p. contests. romney picked up his third victory in nevada saturday night despite finishing second, though, newt gingrich is vowing to keep campaigning till the g.o.p.

convention this summer. seven minutes after 5:00. jessica doyle is here with today's headline. will it be another start like the finish on wall street? >> we're hoping. let the good times roll. big rally last week. the dow standing at its highest level since before the financial crisis of 2008. nasdaq sits at a level that we haven't seen since 2,000, 11 years. investors still seem to be buying this morning. asian stocks rallied. the dow stands this morning at 12,862, shot up 157 points on friday. the nasdaq surging by 45 and the s&p 500 better by 19. the major averages between one and a half and three percent last week alone. the strong jobs report on friday showed a big comeback for the hard hit manufacturing industry. so far the nation's factories are really defying gloomy forecasts. they added 50,000 jobs in january, their strongest showing in a year. that's on top of 32,000 jobs

added in december. overall employers added 243,000 jobs in january. that's the most in nine months. speaking of a comeback for factories, general motors is riding that wave. bailed out just three years ago g.m. is aiming to make $10 billion a year. 1980s. panama's health minister says noriega's blood pressure was very high nearly leading to a stroke. police believe a fire and subsequent explosion were triggered intentionally at a home in washington state. investigators say josh powell was trying to kill himself and his two young sons and unfortunately he did. powell has been a person of interest since his wife susan powell disappeared in utah to years ago. the home burst into flames just moments after a social worker arrived with the children for a supervised visit. a man accused of drunk driving gets a second chance. >> the super bowl want the only sporting event on sunday. we'll tell you how the caps did against the bruins. we're back in less than three minutes with your weather first. achoo! the seasons change, but we still may suffer from nasal allergy symptoms.

drowning your sorrows with caffeine. we will have sunshine and lots of it. that's going to help as we have a frosty start this morning. all the weather watchers say it is a frosty cold morning. the bus stop forecast calling for that as well. mainly clear, frosty. got some fog toward cumberland and in the mountains of west virginia. temperatures this morning running in the low 20s in a lot of areas to the low 30s in the warm spots. sunrise 7:10. sets at 5:35 this afternoon. 40 degrees by 9:00. by 11:00 46. winds today southwest 5 to 10. that will push temps into the lower 50s by 1:00 and into the mid-50s for highs with a 3:00 p.m. temperature of 53. we're driving home, still sunny and nice with a temperature right about that 51-degree mark. this morning we've got mid-20s in pax river, the tappahannock down in the northern neck. fredricksburg is 28. culpeper in the low 20s. winchester still 30 degrees.

in cumberland with the fog 28. 23 reston and manassas. 24 fort belvoir. 29 rock hill. that's one of the warmer readings. columbia is 28 and 28 also in baden this morning. outside with clear skies, good visibility. no problems there. grab the sunglasses along with the jacket this morning and the gloves. temperature 31 but it feels like 26 and that dew point is in the mid-20s. about 27 degrees. much of the country is pretty quiet this monday morning. got some snow showers in southwestern colorado. biggest action of weather would be along the gulf coast here coming outside of louisiana into mississippi. then down in the florida keys to south florida, we're seeing quite a few showers and thunderstorms down there. that's it. the rest of the country as i said fairly quiet but we're see something cold air trying to come in. with the northwesterly flow a little bit of energy. the energy is going to get here wednesday in the form of a little clipper. we're talking about fast moving

systems which often don't have a lot of moisture to work with but cold enough they can produce just a touch of snow here. this afternoon, tonight our future cast all quiet stopping at tuesday at 6:00 a.m. we'll go to tuesday afternoon. it's all quiet again at 5:00 p.m. so lots of sunshine. another mild day both today and tomorrow highs in the mid-50s. as we head towards wednesday, notice the clouds increasing wednesday morning. then watch how some of this blue -- and this blue on our map is snow -- this blue moves in toward us during the day and overspreads some of the region in the afternoon and evening. north of the mason-dixon line there may be minor accumulations but i think during the day on wednesday even if we get flurries or light snow, temperatures should be warm enough where this is going to melt mainly on the road surfaces. some of the higher elevations out west could see higher consume layings but right now just some conversational snow is the way it looks. we'll be watching in case something changes but don't be surprised to see a couple of flakes on wednesday after a

sunday went smoothly and orderly. protesters even played classic rock as police and hazmat crews went tent to tent throwing away any bedding or material that posed a health risk. one uproar came when a medical tent was trashed here but the s.w.a.t. team in riot gear never had to move in. police are enforcing the no camping rule and many occupiers have been invited to sleep at area shelters and churches, including lutheran place. >> it was important for us to help them because we feel they've been helping us in terms of spreading the message, the inequality in our nation. >> reporter: you may remember 11 people were arrested at mcpherson square when police moved into to inspect those tents saturday. the occupiers there have resisted in the past and resisted saturday. many shouting at police and were shoved literally out of the park. one police officer is being treated after a brick was thrown in his face. here at freedom plaza, those things were very different from

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it is 5:45 a.m. this monday morning. we're all sporting our own team mugs thanks to mike hydeck. his patriots didn't make t. my team didn't make it. monika's skins didn't make it and neither did howard's jets make it. >> we win together and lose together. >> and we have a winning forecast. >> a fine start to the week. you'll like that unless you're looking for something a little colder. we'll get colder a little this wednesday and this coming weekend. going to get a lot colder than it has been. let's get you moving this monday morning. maybe fill up that cup of coffee with your favorite muck of the day.

at the -- mug of the day. at the bus stop temperatures in the low 20s to lower 30s. we'll have sunshine but also frosty conditions in the mountains out west cumberland, petersburg, west virginia we've got fog this morning. 8:00 40 degrees. by noon 49. southwest winds at 7 miles an hour. this afternoon we're going about 55 with a 5:00 p.m. temperature still at 51 degrees. so this is going to abgood start to the week -- to be a good start to the week. frosty this morning along with fog west but mild temperatures. not just today but tuesday as well. both days should see highs around 55 give or take. clipper comes here wednesday into wednesday night and clippers generally move fast. they don't have a lot of moisture but still a chance of some flurries and light snow. maybe a sprinkle or two as we get into the afternoon and evening hours on wednesday wait it looks now. i don't think this is going to be amounting to much but it will be a little different wednesday than monday and tuesday. this morning we're down in the 20s from easton to pax river to tappahannock.

all mid-20s down there. low 20s to the west, culpeper, catlett. our weather watchers in bowie and prince frederick all reporting frost this morning. lots of it. gaithersburg is 25 and here in washington we've got nice clear skies. looking outside on our weather camera, 31 degrees and a good looking moon. we showed you that live shot a few minutes ago. feels like 26 though with the 5 mile an hour wind and the humidity this morning 85%. nationally things are relatively quiet. some snow showers in colorado, northern new mexico. we've got the big storm, another one spinning out there in the pacific but the most active weather today down along the south, the gulf coast and down to the keys from florida to south florida there in miami seeing some of those showers and storms. and around here just relatively quiet. so we're talking about a clipper for wednesday. as we look at the future cast, all is going to be fairly quiet today as we head into tonight. still lots of sunshine into the day on tuesday. as we head toward tuesday night

out to the west, the midwest, the ohio valley, here comes some snow showers into pennsylvania by wednesday morning. looks like that's going to be trying to come across us during the day on wednesday or wednesday afternoon, wednesday evening. we've got 55 this afternoon for washington, hagerstown 50. cumberland the low 50s with culpeper 57 potentially with the sun shine and annapolis at 54. so our forecast looks good today and tomorrow. we'll be in the 50s with 30s tonight. colder wednesday. some flurries or light snow developing in the afternoon and evening. i don't think it will amount to much. maybe just a tiny bit wednesday night. thursday 46 and colder, 30, for the upcoming weekend. it's 5:48. monika is in with your time saver traffic. i'm happy to say we're still incident free all around town on the beltway and all the major thoroughfares heading to the beltway this morning. good morning. we'll start off with the north side of town. we're actually going to take a live look in this area. no problems to report as you leave 95 heading into silver spring. this is route 29 at fairland as

you travel south on route 29. you're going to be okay to the beltway and same story on 95 coming down from baltimore. we'll go back over to the maps and this time out route 50 coming in from annapolis. bw parkway through sheverly inside the beltway, both of those major corridors are doing fine. we'll take a live look on the south side of town, branch avenue on the inner loop heading toward oxon hill, alexandria across the wilson bridge everything is moving smoothly this morning. coming up in my next report, delays forming on 95 and 66 at 6:01. back to you. the virginia house of delegates has passed a bill that would let private adoption agencies block certain adoptions over religious or moral beliefs. republican todd gilbert of woodstock says his bill protects religious freedom. the state works directly with many private adoption agencies and this bill amounts to government sanctioned discrimination. pretty soon you could have to show a photo i.d. before you register to vote in virginia.

a committee in the virginia house of delegates passed a bill which would tighten the rules for voter registration and in person voting. if it passes, you'd have to present a government issued i.d. before you cast your ballot as well. besides the draw of the game, the commercials are always one of the most committing things about the super bowl. >> they're just as much a tradition as the game itself in many cases. a party was hosted by our media partner "u.s.a. today." >> reporter: for the past 24 hours, a "u.s.a. today" has put together these ad meter groups, a room full of super bowl commercial critics so vote on which they liked the best. about 150 people have packed this room to figure out which one will come out on top. once they had plenty to eat and drink, the panel took their instructions. >> we want you here for the commercials. we don't care about the game. >> reporter: three sat back and casted their votes as the ads ran. administrators brought in a diverse crowd of all ages and

they simply were looking to get one question answered. >> they rate the commercials, how much they like or dislike them. >> reporter: as you would expect, there were mixed reactions over the spots that cost $3.5 million each for 30 seconds of air time. >> i think they've been great. i've loved the throwbacks to class cam music and classical rock. >> they didn't stick out to me as saying wow. >> reporter: there were some favorites early o. even the technicians could tell. but reading numbers through high-tech -- by reading numbers through high-tech equipment. >> i really liked the sir elton john. >> a little pug with the shoes racing against the greyhound. >> reporter: although most enjoyed the simple laughs from the commercials, others see the ads as a form of therapy. >> they're good to keep you entertained for these moments that we're behind by one point. the commercial eases the pain a little bit. >> reporter: of course now the objection question. which commercial won here in washington. the panel chose this one.
